New TIXATI 1.72 Released

September 1, 2011

UDP Peer Connections

Tixati now supports UDP Peer Connections. Our implementation is fully compatible with other clients, but also contains many key improvements to provide vastly better congestion avoidance characteristics, better security, TCP friendliness, and much higher top speed. We have experienced very good results in both emulated and real-world network environments, under a wide array of loss, re-ordering, and delay conditions.

Several new options have been added to Settings > Network > Connections. These allow control over protocol preference and connection timing, including the ability to fully disable TCP or UDP peer connections.

A UPC monitor has been added to the diagnostic tools. This shows a list of all connections including detailed statistics, as well as charts of congestion window sizes, round-trip times, time stamp data, and loss rates.

A UPC log window has also been added to the diagnostic tools. This can optionally log several aspects of socket operation, including raw packets.

UDP Hole-Punching

Tixati now supports incoming and outgoing UDP hole-punching, compatible with all other clients supporting the common "ut_holepunch" extension. This alleviates the need to map an incoming port through broadband routers and firewalls that use network address translation (NAT).

New PEX Core

The PEX (Peer EXchange) engine has been completely rebuilt from scratch. This was needed for optimal operation of UDP Hole-Punching, and should perform much better than previous versions. A much higher connection success rate is now achieved due to these changes.

New Throttle Timing Core

The engine that controls the timing and spacing of both UDP and TCP packets has been re-engineered to raise the minimum packet size under heavy bandwidth restriction. This helps improve throughput by maximizing the average ratio of packet data to packet header.

CPU usage under heavy throttling should be a bit lower now as the throttle now works under a single-pass algorithm as opposed to the previous multi-pass system which would need to repeat many times per cycle.

New Base Sockets Event Notifiers

The Linux event mechanism for sockets is now EPOLL-based instead of the old Realtime-Signals system. This allows events to be processed with far fewer system calls and switches between threads.

Both the Windows and Linux event mechanisms are now mostly lock-free, which also eliminates many system calls.

Multi-Priority Task Engine

The way in which Tixati handles it's various background duties has now been organized into priority levels. This means that low-priority tasks (such as offline-checking file pieces) will not interfere with regular tasks (processing peer messages or saving pieces) or high-priority tasks (servicing UPC or the throttle). This should also improve interface responsiveness.

The task engine has also been made lock-free, eliminating thousands of system calls per task-cycle.

Minor Protocol-Compatibility Improvements

HTTP connections are more reliable and compatible than ever. We made several improvements that allow Tixati to operate reliably with servers that use uncommon keep-alive or compression schemes.

Peer connections now also support the "upload_only" extension within the inner "m" LT-EXT dictionary as opposed to the traditional field of the same name used in the outer root LT-EXT dictionary. This was observed on the open internet in a common client and added for the sake of better compatibility.

Miscellaneous Other Fixes/Improvements

Several other minor improvements and fixes have been made within the GUI. A new "Link" column has been added for peers. Auto-Shutdown can now optionally wait for both downloads and seeds to complete. Several other minor fixes have been made.

TIXATI vs uTorrent

Better is a relative word. Some people still think that uTorrent is better than Tixati. I'm a software jonkey. I can assure you I have installed at least 20 Bittorrent clients and I've got the best result with Tixati so far. uTorrent is the 5th or 6th at my top Bittorrent clients list. The main advantages of uTorrent (for me) would be:
- Its clean design and look
- High popularity among all private trackers . You know for a fact that uTorrent is not baned in any private tracker.
- Stablity. If you experience a power failure or a sudden restart you may end up losing some settings in Tixati. This is not the case in uTorrent.

The main advantages of Tixati (again in my opinion) would be:
- It's fast and uses less system resources.
- A lot of good and handy features.
- Good response to user's feedback (in forum)
- Fast [and advanced] algorithms for download/upload/throttling. Although I should mention that in very rare cases uTorrent is faster (for instance I tested both clients at my friend's house, uTorrent downloaded faster). But usually Tixati is much faster.
- It uses the half-downloaded pieces in files so data is rarely wasted (this is not the case in uTorrent. If you pause/stop a lot, you could end up wasting 100MB in a large torrent)

Summary:
In my opinion Tixati has a lot of way to go but it's at the top of my list. I don't have any problems with it but surely it could be better. I think when Tixati hits the 2 or 2.5 version, it'll be the perfect client. The important thing is that Tixati is on the right track and with a lot of work from us (by providing feedback) and developers (by listening to them) we'll get there. Anyway even right now it doesn't have that much of a rival.

BitTorrent Ultra Accelerator

BitTorrent Ultra Accelerator is an add-on application for BitTorrent that automatically speeds up the download process and finds the files you want with far more power than regular searches. It automatically searches for more sources to ensure 100% bandwidth operation. The program continues interrupted downloads, clears downloaded and erroneous ones. BitTorrent Ultra Accelerator saves configurations from last run and automatically loads it on start-up.

The program also resumes paused downloads, clears downloaded and wrong files, automatically hang up dial-up connection when all downloads finished, minimizes into the system tray for faster and easier operation, automatically searches for more sources at user-specified intervals, shutdown when all downloads finished . It comes with a user friendly interface and it is a FREE program.

Pros: The BitTorrent Ultra Accelerator is an add on tool for the BitTorrent peer to peer file sharing client that improves its performance. The entire bandwidth that is available at any given time is utilized for the purposes of downloading, and this is a great improvement over the basic BitTorrent application which puts upper limits on the download speeds. When downloading there are more frequent searches which results in more peers being added to a given download. Both these factors result in reduced downloading times and therefore better download performance on an average.
Other features are management and control oriented but still help in overall improvement. These include automatic resumption of paused downloads, as well as automatically managing downloads on start / stop connections (by making this process automatic). Configuration information is stored on shut down and automatically reloaded on startup, requiring less effort on the users side. Due to more frequent searching as well as a higher number of simultaneous searches, the overall search performance is significantly better, with more results showing up on average.
Cons: The simplicity of the interface that makes it easy to use, also ends up making it a negative factor for the software. It allows for no customization whatsoever and thus the user is stuck with whatever he or she has got.

Music Industry Censor The Pirate Bay

ThePirateBay Logo

The Pirate Bay is at the center of a new lawsuit filed at the District Court in Helsinki, Finland. The music industry representatives have filed suit against one of the major ISP (Internet Service Providers) in the country, demanding that it blocks subscriber access to the BitTorrent site. The Pirate Bay is currently one of the most visited websites in Finland.

Hollywood lays an Injunction against PirateBay

Several major entertainment industry companies including Columbia Pictures and Universal Music have updated the injunction against the founders of The Pirate Bay. The initial order prevented the founders from operating the BitTorrent site on pain of a 500,000 Swedish kronor fine, but it became unenforceable after The Pirate Bay removed its tracker.

Media Streaming Beat P2P

According to the recent statistics, movie streaming of Netflix is reaching its peaks by surpassing other peer-to-peer services, which has largely surprised Hollywood. In other words, this is most likely the 1st time in the history of the Internet as it is when the biggest part of its traffic is paid for. Or, at least that’s what claims the 2011 spring Internet traffic report made by Sandvine, a company offering to the largest Internet service providers such services as network management and development of measurement software.

According to the report, Netflix is currently accounts for over 22% of all broadband traffic of the United States, while BitTorrent’s, for example, only covers 21%. Moreover, at peak times, the streaming service can reach 30% of all Internet traffic, which makes it a huge leap from the figures stated last fall.

One Swarm Application Info

Currently the source of the application can be obtained from GitHub, with binaries and the source code available for three operating systems: Windows, Linux, and Mac. A team from TorrentFreak already tested the client and admitted it had reached quite reasonable download speeds, which was confirmed in one of the academic papers released by the developers. During the performance test, it was found out that OneSwarm proved to be better than such alternatives as Freenet and BitTorrent over Tor. Nevertheless, the developers remind us that the transfers performed in a “public” mode are still unsafe.

New BitTorrent Client Respects Privacy

The University of Washington may be proud of helping to create another BitTorrent application, named OneSwarm. Unlike other applications, this one promises its users to guard their confidential information, enabling people to share files anonymously. The application works with a web browser and available for three operating systems: Windows, Linux, and Mac.
